Today is a magical day. Not only is it a cross-quarter day, halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, but it is also a new moon. Both events are nature calling us to manifest that new project we promised ourselves would begin in 2011. This is mine.
Here in Southern California spring is blooming in bright colors all around us. However, for many parts of the country the weather is too cold for the delicate petals of spring flowers to come forth. Even in those cold places, the tender beginnings of new life are sprouting from seeds in the soil and on buds along branches of trees.
The darkness of winter calls us to move inward, nurture and care for ourselves so we might emerge fresh in the spring, like the blooming flowers. What ideas have you been feeding in the winter that are ready to spring forth? What is stopping you from manifesting these ideas?
For most of us, the answer is fear.In Make a Name for Yourself, author Robin Fisher Roffer suggests writing a list of the worst sequence of events you are afraid of should you implement your idea.
For example, maybe you’re thinking of starting a blog and you’re worried no one will read it. You write it down: “No one will read my blog.” Now the fear almost seems silly. One because if no one reads it, then it wasn’t meant to be and no harm is done. Two, because it’s not likely. My friend Emily Johnston blogs and recently sent me this quote:
Don’t say anything online that you wouldn’t want plastered on a billboard with your face on it. ~Erin Bury
There it is! Someone will read your blog/newsletter/website. So, now you can write the positive counter to your fear in a list of successes: “People will read my blog.” Perfect! You’re ready.
OK, maybe your idea has nothing to do with the internet. All of us have an internal seed asking for permission to grow. It could be starting or re-starting an excercise routine, calling an old friend, applying for that dream job, asking a crush out on a date. Notice how your breath feels when you think about implementing your idea…does it become shallow or stop all together? Do your shoulder slump?
That’s the body language of fear. So get out your journal or bring up your word processing software and write our all the worst that could happen. Let it all out without judging what you write. Try to go quickly so you don’t censor yourself. My fear lists usually end with “I’ll have to live on the street and eat out of dumpsters.”
Thankfully, street life isn’t a real possibility for me. My friends and family won’t let that happen. But my subconscious needs to know I recognize the presence of that fear and all the others. The magical part comes when I face that fear and let it go…turn the page of the journal or open a new document….and move onto writing out the successes. My shoulders relax, the breath deepens and possibilities become realities.
Find the courage to write a fear list, and even more courageous, a success list for your idea. Then sleep on it, and allow the magic of the new moon to feed your dreams tonight. Let me know how you feel in the morning:)
